NONI
The Miracle Plant?
September 4 - Due
to popular demand for more information about this fruit, I have
copied parts of an article from the March 2002 edition of Costa
Rica Caribbean Way magazine which ran a feature article on Noni.
We know several people here who claim to have been cured of cancers,
diabetes and skin disorders. Others use it as a preventive medicine
or even wrinkle reducer. We have been drinking Noni for about
a week now, and so far feel great!

Noni,
Morinda citrifolia, is originally from the Southern Pacific,
but today is distributed all over the tropics, including the Costa
Rican Caribbean where it can be found in abundance along the beaches.
It belongs to the rubiaceous family and its size ranges from a
small bush to a 24 foot tree. Fruits are harvested all year long.
Noni has several names and usages depending on different cultures.
It is known as pig's apple, cheese fruit, indian berry, pain away
tree, lada or nonu, and its usages range from animal's food to
die extracted from its root.
But out o f all of them, the most important one is the medicinal
due to its health benefits, which have been registered and passed
on for generations, among the peoples of Polynesia, Australia,
Malaysia, India and the Caribbean islands. In Polynesia it is
called the miraculous plant.
Seeds are known for their cleansing action, its bark has astringent
qualities, and it is used to treat malaria, the leaves are pain
relievers and are used to reduce external swelling, and roots
extracts v lower blood pressure. But the most amazing thing about
this fruit is that it has over 100 medicinal uses.
Noni medical research started in the 50's and since then scientists
are trying understand its huge impact on our bodies.
Amazing results have been achieved, clinically as well as traditionally,
in the immune system, digestion, breathing, cardiovascular, endocrine,
muscular and bone treatments. Noni has been proven to have over
50 properties, amongst them: antiseptic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory,
anti-parasitic, antioxidant, metabolic regulator and many more.
It is without a doubt extraordinarily beneficial in preventive
medicine and self help for many health problems. Because of its
extraordinary properties, Noni stands among nature's treasures,
and although we still have a lot to learn about it until scientists
reveal its secrets, we might be looking at one of the most important
health discoveries this century!!
Many companies in other countries already sell it as a nutritional
supplement, in juices or in dried powder in pellets, and many
countries produce it. Although in our Caribbean coast it has not
been used traditionally, its fruit is gaining popularity due to
a big awareness of its properties and to ideal climatic conditions
for its reproduction.
The fruit is bitter and smells bad - very bad - especially when
ripe. Different people have different descriptions, but for me
it smells like rotten cheese and very bad body odor at the same
time. It truly smells horrible. However, when you drink it, it
just about has no taste!!! Because of its smell when ripe, some
people recommend to take it before it is ripe since it still has
all of its properties, but this claim is not supported by all.
Those that have been cured of cancers claim that it must be very
very - even somewhat fermented - for its optimal effects.
Blend it with water or natural juices and drink a glass the size
of a vodka shot at least 30 minutes before breakfast, on an empty
stomach and depending on the case, sometimes another one in the
afternoon. You cannot drink it with coffee, tobacco or alcohol
or it will not be effective. Results vary according to each person.
A three month's treatment is recommended.
